Why I created The Scenic Route
I wanted travellers to have an option that avoids everything I disliked about large-group tours:
No rushing
No strict schedules
No crowds
No being herded around
No strangers dictating how long you stay
With a private tour, the day is yours.
If you want to linger longer somewhere, we stay.
If you’re ready to move on, we go.
It’s as simple as that.
What I’ve Learned From Touring Around the World
After travelling around the world and joining more tours than I can count, I realised something: you learn a lot about a place on a tour, but you learn even more about people.
I’ve been on tours where everything flowed perfectly. A small group, a relaxed guide, time to actually enjoy the stops, those were the days I still remember.
And then there were the other days.
Days where half the group wandered off in different directions because someone thought the guide said “meet back at the tree”… in a place with 400 trees.
Days where we spent more time waiting for people to return to the bus than we did at the actual attraction.
Days where the tour was less “cultural experience” and more “let’s see what unpredictable thing happens next.”
There was always someone running late. Someone asking questions the guide definitely wasn’t prepared for. Someone who didn’t believe in the concept of a meeting point. By the end of a few of those trips, it felt like the tour was being run by the group, not the guide.
Those moments made me realise how much better travel feels when you can simply explore at your own pace, no rushing, no rigid timetable, no mystery disappearances, no waiting around while someone gets “just one more photo.”
So when I started The Scenic Route, I built it around everything I loved about the good days, and everything I wished the tougher days had:
space, flexibility, breathing room, and the freedom to actually enjoy the places you’ve travelled so far to see.

Hey, I’m Lachie! Your guide, driver, photographer, playlist selector… and enthusiastic snack recommender..
Born and raised in Victoria, I’ve spent years exploring scenic lookouts, hidden corners, coastal roads, and cafés that take coffee way too seriously. I’ve also joined more tours overseas than I can count, which taught me two important things:
The relaxed tours are always the best ones, and
There is always one person who wanders off at the worst possible moment.
So now I run tours with one simple goal:

Born and raised in Victoria, I’ve travelled widely and experienced tours of every style, from small private guides to huge group buses. Those experiences taught me exactly what makes a day truly enjoyable… and what doesn’t. The Scenic Route is built on the idea that travel should feel effortless.
